Why Home Gym Equipment is Your Secret Weapon!

Home Gym Equipment is now more affordable than ever, and with such a huge range on offer there is no excuse not to keep in shape!

Getting kitted up and travelling to a gym isn’t for everyone.

Some gym memberships can be very costly, and you may just find the travelling inconvenient when you want to workout, now! or if you are very new to exercise, you may feel self-consious or a little overwhelmed by it all.

Regular exercise is really important for reducing your chances of suffering from cardiovascular health issues, along with helping to control your body weight and avoid back and joint problems later in life.

As you exercise, your percentage of lean muscle mass will increase (a little) and your overall body fat levels will start to drop. One of the great benefits is that the more muscle you have, the more calories your body will burn.

Withought a regular exercise schedule in place you will ultimately find it much harder to manage your weight long-term.

There are so many exercises that you can do at home to achieve any fitness goal including weight-loss (fat burning), strength, stamina (endurance) and CV fitness.

For most of these you don’t need any equipment to start with, because your bodyweight alone provides more than enough resistance for most of these objectives.

Kettlebells, Bosu, Step, Risers
Kettlebells, Bosu, Step, Risers

As you progress from learning the basics, you will find that you get stronger! What does this mean? You need something heavier or harder to workout with in order to provide further increased gains.

This is where home exercise equipment comes in. Home workouts are hugely popular right now, and the lost cost of kitting out your home into a mini gym makes it all that more affordable and desireable.

I have chosen some of the best pieces of home exercise equipment you can buy for yourself today.

You don’t need to go out and buy them all at once, nor do you need to have them all.

Things you should always do when using home gym equipment

– Always warm up before doing your main exercises. This will help warm up and prepare your muscles ready for action.

– When warming up, try lightly working the same muscles you are about to train in your actual routine.

– Perform your exercises with the correct technique. Do not rush your movements or try using heavier weights than you can manage, as this can cause injuries or strains

– If you have any current medical or health issues such as injuries, always consult with your local doctor prior to starting any exercise programme.

The Ab Roller Wheel is an amazing piece of home gym equipment. Being just a small sturdy wheel with a rod through its center which provides the handles to grip.

It is known as an ab roller wheel because it’s main function is to assist doing core strengthening exercises, which when used correctly will help you build a strong core, lats and triceps.

The great thing about ab roller wheels is that they are an inexpensive piece of fitness equipment, so well worth adding to your resources.

Building a strong core is really important when it comes to doing any physical activity, as it helps lower your risk of muscular injury. Not only does an ab roller wheel target your abdominals, but it also targets your lower back. A strong back is important because as you roll forward your back will naturally tend to arch, so strong muscles will help to counteract this arching.

When working out with your home gym equipment, there are literally thousands of exercises you can perform standing up, squatting, kneeling or even jumping but if you want to really get into resistance training, then one of the most important pices of home gym equipment you can buy is a weights bench.

Weights benches are available with a wide range of specifications, so it really is important to choose one that matches your requirements. Weights benches can differ drastically in quality, i.e. the overall strength of the materials used and the stability itself. Versitility is the game when it comes to weights bench options – Incline, Decline, Folding, Leg Extension, barbell racking – the list is endless when it comes to the options available.

Personally, I suggest just starting off with a simple low-cost bench from which you can start trying out the various exercises. As you progress through and become hooked like me, it is certainly worth investing in a bench which can support incline & decline workouts, in addition to providing leg/ankle support for additional stability.

Depending on the type of bench you have, you can use them in so many other ways too: for step up exercises, sitting exercises, kneeling exercises … use your imagination and creativity to incorporate a weights bench into your next exercise routine.

q? encoding=UTF8&MarketPlace=GB&ASIN=B01617M3XC&ServiceVersion=20070822&ID=AsinImage&WS=1&Format= SL250 &tag=thehealthyinsider 21ir?t=thehealthyinsider 21&l=am2&o=2&a=B01617M3XC

Aboutir?t=thehealthyinsider 21&l=am2&o=2&a=B0044S28JA

Dumbbells are a fantastic addition to anyones range of home gym equipment, and are one of the most popular pieces of fitness equiment which have ever been made.

For strength training, they are one of the most fundamental tools and form a substational part of millions of workouts done on a regular basis.

Buying either a complete set of dumbbells or sets which include dumbbells in multiple weight ranges are a really low-cost way of starting or building up your range of home gym equipment, with the added benefit that they take up hardly any home space when compared with other available fitness equipment.

Using dumbbells alone as part of your regular exercise regime may help build strength, tone and shape your underlying muscles, but they won’t help with providing that toned body we all look towards. For this you’ll need to add in some regular aerobic exercise in addition to maintaining your healthy dietry nutrition.

  • You can train every muscle in your body
  • Don’t require much storage space
  • Improved muscular co-ordination
  • Increased range of motion (when compared to using barbells or machines)

4/ Barbell Set

q? encoding=UTF8&MarketPlace=GB&ASIN=B01C9YD3I0&ServiceVersion=20070822&ID=AsinImage&WS=1&Format= SL250 &tag=thehealthyinsider 21ir?t=thehealthyinsider 21&l=am2&o=2&a=B01C9YD3I0

Aboutir?t=thehealthyinsider 21&l=am2&o=2&a=B0044S28JA

Owning a barbell set is another of those important choices you should make if you wish to gain strength efficiently and safely. The great thing about barbell workouts is that over a period of time you will gradually increase the weight for the same exercises, making you stronger and stronger. Just by adding more weight to each end of the bar on your free weight exercises, you don’t need to increase the length of your workout to get the extra benefit.

Barbells will help improve the strength on nearly every muscle in your body. When working out at home, a barbell set makes so much sense because it takes up hardly any space and will certainly cost a lot less than buying some other fitness resistance equipment you can buy.

As you increase in strength, the only thing you need to do is add more weight. You can keep using the same bar over and over (to it’s limit), which makes owning a barbell set a more cost effective choice than some ‘fixed-weight’ dumbbell sets, where you have to replace them if you want heavier resistance.

Similar to other pices of home gym equipment, barbells are available in a multitude of choices from the famous ‘Olympic’ barbell to the EZ Curl barbell and Tricep/Hammer Curl barbell.
All of these are available in different lengths and sizes for different types of weight plates. Many also have different ways off fixing the weight plates onto the bar, so it is very important when buying heavier plates that you choose ones suitable for your bar.

5/ Resistance Tubes (Cables)

q? encoding=UTF8&MarketPlace=GB&ASIN=B06Y4CFFGZ&ServiceVersion=20070822&ID=AsinImage&WS=1&Format= SL250 &tag=thehealthyinsider 21ir?t=thehealthyinsider 21&l=am2&o=2&a=B06Y4CFFGZ

 Aboutir?t=thehealthyinsider 21&l=am2&o=2&a=B0044S28JA

Resistance tubes are one of my favourite pieces of home gym equipment because it’s just like having a gym in a bag!. Depending on the resistance cables you choose they are generally supplied all at the same length, but vary in the amount of resistance needed to pull on them. The higher the resistance, the thicker the cable and the shorter the distance you will likely be able to extend to.

Most resistance tube packs are also supplied with a series of attachments. In order to use resistance cables they are usually supplied with a couple of handles, ankle straps and a door connector.

Working with resistance tubes is fantastic because not only can you vary the resistance by changing the single cable you use, you can also connect multiple cables to each handle to further increase the overall resistance.

Unlike using heaver dumbbells and barbells where gravity is always trying to pull the weights from your hands, with resistance tubes it is far easier to control the movement of the exercise as the angle of resistance can be adjusted depending where you attach the cables to, rather than just resisting in a downwards direction.

6/ Kettlebells

Aboutir?t=thehealthyinsider 21&l=am2&o=2&a=B0044S28JA

Kettlebells have always been thought of as something only the elite in fitness use as part of their workouts, and not for the mainstream. Kettlebells over recent years have started to become a very popular piece of fitness equipment, with authentic ones made from cast iron or steel and others covered in vinyl. Like dumbbells, kettlebells are a type of round free weight with a flat base and have an arced handle on top. They kind of look like either cannonballs with a handle or a teapot with a spout (which is where they get their name).

Unlike dumbbells, kettlebells can be used in all sorts of ways, such as being held, pressed, juggled, thrown and swung. As a truly portable piece of home gym equipment, you can incorporate kettlebells into all types of fitness training, and make a fantastic tool for helping with weight-loss, toning, improving strength and stamina, fitness and flexibility.

Aboutir?t=thehealthyinsider 21&l=am2&o=2&a=B0044S28JA

The Squat Rack (Barbell Stand) is one of those pieces of home gym equipment that many people do not own, purely because it is seen as a professional piece of fitness equipment which only belongs in a gym.

As the range of home gym equipment has expanded over the years, this type of equipment has been adapted and reduced in cost to make it a viable piece of your home gym solution.

The Squat Rack is really beneficial for doing three of the major compound resistance exercises, such as Squats, Bench Press & Overhead (Military) Press. Like all home gym fitness equipment, they are available in a wide range of choices and with added options from spotter bars to dip bars, and with adjustability to suit not only different body sizes, but to also suit different bar sizes.

The quality of manufacture and overall stability does vary quite considerably, so you really need to read the reviews first. The last thing you want is for your heavy barbell to come crashing down on top of you mid exercise!

Having a squat rack or barbell stand seriously increases the range of exercises you can do, and much safer too – especially the ones with good quality spotter bars to catch the weight when your energy drops mid rep.

Aboutir?t=thehealthyinsider 21&l=am2&o=2&a=B0044S28JA

Available in all different materials, shapes, sizes and colours, exercise mats are the base of many home workouts.

Execise mats are designed primarily to help prevent injuries, and support the body through it’s range of movement. The most important thing is to choose one that fits the type of exercises you wish to perform on it, such as yoga and stretching. Mats can vary in the amout of padding they provide as well as the amount of traction they offer. If you tend to sweat a lot, then mats covered in plastic may not be suitable as you may end of slipping, although they are easier to wipe clean!

Aboutir?t=thehealthyinsider 21&l=am2&o=2&a=B0044S28JA

Medicine Balls often get confused with another exercise ball, the Swiss Exercise Stability Ball (see 13 below for more info!)
This is a solid ball which is available in weights ranging from around ont to 5o pounds, and range in size right upto something like a beach ball.

Older style medicine balls have a tacky surface to help with grip whilst the newer designs have grip handles which make them easier to use when doing similar exercises to those done with dumbbells or kettlebells. The main types are ones that bounce, and ones that don’t.

The outside material can vary from leather & vinyl to nylon, thick rubber or polyurethane, and the inside is often filled with air, gel or even sand.

Aboutir?t=thehealthyinsider 21&l=am2&o=2&a=B0044S28JA

The EZ Curl Bar is another great piece of home gym equipment, and offers a slight variation to standard barbell exercises in that it changes the angle of your grip – putting your wrists, forearms and elbows in much more comfortable position.

Variation equipment like this can also be useful if you suffer from any standard overuse injury created from using a standard barbell. The EZ curl bar takes some of the tension away from your biceps, and therefore shifts the tension in your arms.

Great for doing standard exercises such as bicep curls and lying tricep extensions. Is the EZ curl bar any better than using a stand barbell? the dury is out on that one. Whilst there are pros and cons for both, I don’t think either is particularly better than the other, just offering different types of grip position.

buy now

  • Weighs less than a standard barbell
  • EZ curl bar is better for your wrists
  • Better grip for Curling and Tricep extensions
  • Alternative to the standard barbell
  • Excellent for isolating the biceps and triceps

11/ Skipping Rope (Jump Rope)

q? encoding=UTF8&MarketPlace=GB&ASIN=B01FW7SSI6&ServiceVersion=20070822&ID=AsinImage&WS=1&Format= SL250 &tag=thehealthyinsider 21ir?t=thehealthyinsider 21&l=am2&o=2&a=B01FW7SSI6

Aboutir?t=thehealthyinsider 21&l=am2&o=2&a=B0044S28JA

Aboutir?t=thehealthyinsider 21&l=am2&o=2&a=B0044S28JA

A Tricep Bar (also known as a Hammer Curl Bar) is another favourite piece of home gym equipment. An oval shaped bar with two parallel handles running through it’s middle, with weight shafts on each end. Even though it is mainly known as the triceps bar, you can work other muscles besides.

In a similar way to why you use an EZ curl bar instead of a standard barbell, the Tricep bar can be used to hit your muscles from different angles, helping to reduce stress on various joints.
The Tricep bar is also great for Hammer Curls (hence the other name) where you curl the bar up, but with your palms facing inwards. This works your forearms muscles to the max!
